Helping people with mental health problems into work

What’s happening in the North East?

Recently, organisations in the North East have been working together to find ways to tackle some of the main problems that people with mental health problems are faced with when they are trying to get a job. They asked a number of other people, including people who use services, their carers, employers and employment agencies such as Job Centre Plus, for their views. They have now agreed four priorities,

A Regional Employment Team made up organisations such as Mental Health North East, Government Office and The Health Service has been created to tackle the four priorities through a regional action plan.

The priorities are:

Work in partnership with organisations across the North East. This partnership must include people who use mental health services and their carers, and their views must be at the centre of this work.

Work with employers to tackle stigma and discrimination.

Make sure that money spent on health and social care is used effectively and fairly.

Make sure organisations work together to provide high quality services that meet the needs of local people.

Clients

The Regional Employment Team will co-ordinate everyone who needs to work together

A case worker will make sure that anyone starting work is properly supported

Review of skills, training and support – making sure the right jobs are available for the right people

Working with employers to make sure they offer equal opportunities, and offering support to employers and people starting a new job

Continuing to support the employer and the employee with mental health problems to help the employee stay in work and develop their career
