Integrating and mainstreaming sickness and disability benefit claimants into the active UK and Danish welfare states

The past two decades have seen most western countries make an 'active turn' in the provision ofout of work benefits to people of working age (Van Oorschot and Abrahamson 2003) and whilst the expectation that claimants of unemployment benefits should actively seek work is by now well established, governments have more recently sought to extend the same principle to claimants of benefits that have not hitherto had many conditions attached to them. In most OECD countries, the biggest of these groups are sickness and disability benefits (OECD 2010).
